David Rogers-Smith - Bio
David Rogers-Smith is highly regarded as a performer of classical, operatic and musical theatre repertoire.
David Rogers-Smith has been performing on the professional stage since the early 90s, and has risen the ranks to earn high levels of acclaim throughout his storied career. David has earned roles in notable productions of Les Miserables, The Phantom of the Opera, Sweeney Todd, Madama Butterfly and countless others with a close association with both Melbourne Opera and Victorian Opera.
David has also been a vocal coach for over 20 years. He has taught at The University of Melbourne and Monash University as a Music Theatre Specialist and is currently on staff at Monash and Toorak College, Mt Eliza.
There is rarely a theatre production in Australia without students of David's performing. Shows in which students have performed (or are currently performing) include: West Side Story, Jersey Boys, The Phantom of the Opera, Lion King, King Kong, Dirty Dancing, Les Miserables, Legally Blonde, Sweet Charity etc.
David firmly believes there is no one methodology to suit all singers.
Students are guided through multi-modal approaches and speaking to the whole brain - methods informed by the Hermann Brain Dominance Instrument (HBDI) amongst many other techniques. This teaches various ways to raise and lower the laryngeal position, change the shape of the pharynx and alter breathing/support structures to give the correct sound and style appropriate to various musical theatre, opera and contemporary vocal requirements.
We are so excited to have David direct a Musical Theatre Storytelling workshop for us at The Big Sing Festival!
