With more than 25 years' professional experience as a musician, musical director and master vocal coach on major theatrical productions worldwide, Tim Smith has become a sought-after vocal coach with clients in cities ranging from Paris and London to Sydney and Brisbane.

Tim has recently returned from South Korea where he was the International
Associate Musical Supervisor of a Korean language production of Billy Elliot.

 

Before that he toured Australia as Associate Musical Director on The Lion
King
and on an earlier production that toured Australia and China. He was
the Musical Director/Associate during the Australian tour of Mamma Mia!,
was Assistant MD for Billy Elliot in Australia, and was the Founding Head of
Music Theatre at the Victorian College of the Arts.

 

Before that he was Music Director or Associate on more than twenty other musicals including the Australian Premieres of Sondheim’s Anyone Can Whistle and Sunday In The Park With George and Bombshells for Melbourne Theatre Company with Caroline O’Connor, which toured to London’s West End. As Artistic Director of Vocal Alchemy, he has taken music theatre voice workshops in England, Ireland, Scotland, France and around Australia. He has presented on music theatre and contemporary voice for The Australian National Association for Teachers of Singing (ANATS).


During the past 25 years he has been engaged as a lecturer/guest
speaker/music director at a number of Australian universities and
performing arts institutions including the Australian National Theatre, the
Arts Academy at Ballarat University, the Melbourne Conservatorium and
The Victorian College of the Arts where he co-authored the original
syllabus for the Bachelor of Music Theatre degree.


His private vocal teaching practice includes contemporary pop artists, MT
professionals and pre-professionals and classical singers exploring cross-
over techniques whilst further developing their classical technique. He has
advanced practical knowledge of voice physiology, acoustics and artistic
process across style. In any given week, you might find him in Asia,
America, The Middle East or all around Australia working with singers on
Skype.


Originally trained as a classical pianist, orchestral conductor, singer and
educator, his work covers a wide variety of areas and styles. He has been
a musical director and vocal coach/consultant for the Walt Disney
Company throughout Australia and Asia for the past thirteen years. He
has been the resident composer at Meerkat Productions for the past 15
years, composed the national touring children’s musical Stripey The
Emu Chick and in 2016 composed the score for the short film
Reactions. During 2010 he was the composer for an orchestral art-music
project with New York artist Kaye Mahoney.
